Welcome to Term 3

Thank you and welcome...
Wow, I can't believe that the year is already half way through. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support through the year. The children of Team 14 are fantastic, and I am very lucky to be working with such a responsive group of learners. I would also like to welcome Hannah Thomson and her family to Team 14. They have shifted to Christchurch from Sydney over the holiday break.

Energise Me ...
Term 3 will continue with an inquiry called 'Energise Me'. We will be using this umbrella idea to think about;our basic needs, keeping healthy, having balance in your life, eating and exercise, the human body, keeping warm, respecting ourselves and others and being ready to learn. Thank you to those of you that have sent in resources to support these ideas. If you have ideas or resource people we can access please let me know.

Literacy and Numeracy...
Our literacy focus will be based around transactional texts this term. This means writing recipes, instructions and more factual forms of writing. In Numeracy we will begin to look at the ideas of multiplication and division. However at the Stage 3 - 5 level that means ensuring the children have a good understanding of grouping sets, repeated addition and skip counting. This will form the foundations that they need to understand the concepts of multiplication and division. We will continue to work on developing fast recall of addition and subtraction facts as well.

Arts and PE...
Our PE focus will move to large ball skills at the beginning of the term and then by the end of the term we will start to think about athletics as summer is around the corner. We will continue with an arts rotation on Wednesday afternoons. The children will spend two weeks exploring dance, drama and visual arts through the lens of the 'Energise Me' study. The Junior are mixed into 3 large groups and will work with pairs of teachers for two weeks on each discipline.

Around the middle of the term the children will be sharing their learning with you in our Student Led Conference Sessions.

Trips and Visits...
We have 3 trips planned for this term and will need some parent help on each of these visits. In Week 2 we head to the Ngaio Marsh Theatre to watch the senior school's Wearable Arts Extravaganza. In Week 6 we are going to the museum to work with educators and experience the human body exhibit. We will be using private cars for this visit. In Week 8 we will be going to the Town Hall to see the NZ Army Band!

We hope you all had a wonderful and restful break and were able to keep the bugs at bay. People seem to be very cautious and are keeping low if family members are showing symptoms of sickness. This is probably quite wise.

On that note - if you could spare a box of tissues please send them to school with your child as we have finished our last box.

Looking forward to a fun-filled, busy term with you all.

Kind Regards

Megan

Hi

I'm Mason' mum - Miranda. I'm really interested in ICT as I am the ICT PD Project Director for three boys' schools in Christchurch - Christchurch Boys High School, St Bede's College and Shirley Boys High School. Mason loves using computers - he is often blogging at home or watching U-Tube with his brother Carter. I think if used effectively ICT can improve boys' literacy for example blogging helps students develop digital literacy.

The Terrible Tiger

Today in reading Fin, Mason and Ben read the book "The Terrible Tiger".

We read the book together and then talked about the beginning, the middle and the end of the story.

Ben, Fin and Mason decided the beginning of the story is about finding the tiger.
The middle of the story is seeing a monkey, seeing a bird and then seeing a snake that is the terrible tiger. At the end the children run home and tell Mum they aren't scared of anything.

Then Fin, Ben and Mason took photos showing them acting out the beginning, middle and end of the story, "The Terrible Tiger".

We also heard about different types of heroes that live and work at the SPCA.

Butterfly release!

After much discussion we decided it was best to release our butterfly so that it could lay some eggs on a leaf and keep the butterfly life-cycle going.

Butterfly Magic!

At the beginning of this term we were looking at Butterflies as part of our science learning.
Olivia and Ben W brought in caterpillars and a chrysalis for us to look at.

We got to see the caterpillar munch and crunch all of the leaves on the swan plant - it was a very hungry caterpillar!

We watched closely as the chrysalis turned from green to black.

One morning we noticed the chrysalis was empty - what came out of it... a butterfly of course!

Buddy Class

Every Tuesday afternoon Room 14 visit or are visited by Village 22.

Village 22 is our buddy class for this year. We have enjoyed meeting our Y5 buddies and being able to share our learning with them. We have been reading stories to them and talking to them about our Hero learning.

Last week village 22 came for a visit to our classroom. They sang us a song and read picture books to us - it was awesome!
